Whole Life Insurance for San Diego County and All of California

Coverage that lasts as long as you do, with cash value that builds along the way.

We work only with insurance companies rated A or better by AM Best.

Whole life insurance is lifelong coverage: as long as you keep making payments, it stays active for your whole life and pays a lump sum to the people you name. It also builds cash value you may be able to use while you’re alive.

CBIS is a family-owned independent agency, so we can compare whole life from many insurance companies, which design these policies quite differently. We’re based in Santee, serving San Diego County, and helping people across California by phone or video.

How Whole Life Insurance Works

Lifelong coverage with a savings-like feature built in.

Built to last your lifetime

Unlike term life insurance, it doesn’t end after a set number of years, as long as you keep paying.

Payments usually stay level

On traditional whole life, what you pay is set at the start and doesn’t go up just because you get older.

It builds cash value

Part of each payment goes into cash value that grows at a rate set by the policy. Growth is slow in the early years.

Loans and withdrawals

You may be able to borrow against your cash value or take some out. Unpaid loans, loan interest, and withdrawals lower what your loved ones receive, and if loans grow too large, the policy can end and you may owe taxes.

Payout is generally tax‑free

The lump sum paid to your loved ones is generally free of federal income tax, the same as with other life insurance.

Whole Life vs Term Life

Many families end up with some of each. Here’s how they differ.

Whole life

  • Covers you for life and builds cash value.
  • Costs more each month for the same coverage amount.
  • Some policies may pay dividends, which aren’t promised. They can lower payments, buy more coverage, or be taken as cash.

Good to know: it suits lifelong needs, like leaving money to a spouse or children no matter when you pass away.

Term life

  • Covers a set period, often 10 to 35 years depending on the insurance company.
  • Usually costs much less for the same amount.

Good to know: it suits needs with an end date, like a mortgage or raising kids.

Final expense insurance is also a type of whole life, but smaller and meant for funeral costs. If that’s your main goal, see final expense insurance. Want more say in how much you pay each year? See universal life insurance.

Living Benefits and Other Features

Coverage that can help while you’re here, too

Some whole life policies include or offer living benefits. If you’re diagnosed with a qualifying illness, you may be able to use part of your coverage early, for things like care, treatment, or keeping up with bills.

  • Critical illnessA serious diagnosis such as a heart attack or stroke, as the policy defines it
  • Chronic illnessHelp when a long-term condition makes daily tasks hard. It isn’t long-term care insurance.
  • Terminal illnessEarly access when a doctor certifies a limited life expectancy

Good to know: whatever you use early lowers what your loved ones receive, and it’s separate from borrowing against cash value. Availability, rules, amounts, and costs vary by policy and state. Learn how living benefits work

What Affects the Cost of Whole Life?

Whole life costs more than term for the same amount because it lasts for life and builds cash value. Your price depends on:

  • Your age when the policy starts
  • Your health and medical history
  • Nicotine use, including vaping
  • The coverage amount
  • How long you pay: for life, or a shorter schedule if offered
  • Optional add-ons, such as one that covers your payments if you become disabled

Prices depend mostly on your age, your health, and the amount you choose. Some people pair a smaller whole life policy with a larger term policy to balance cost and lifelong coverage. Ask us for a free side-by-side comparison.

Is Whole Life a Good Fit for You?

Whole life often makes sense when the need lasts a lifetime. It may fit if:

  • You want coverage that won’t run out at a certain age
  • You want to leave lasting support for a spouse, children, or grandchildren
  • You like a set payment you can plan around for decades
  • You have a term policy with a conversion option that’s still open

Whole Life Insurance Questions

Does whole life insurance expire?

No. As long as you keep making the required payments, traditional whole life is designed to stay active for your lifetime, often to a very old age stated in the policy, such as 100 or 121. What happens at that age is set in the policy. Term life ends after a set number of years unless you renew or switch it.

What is cash value, and can I use it?

Cash value is a savings-like feature that builds inside the policy over time. Depending on the policy, you may borrow against it or cancel the policy for its cash value. Loans and withdrawals lower the amount paid to your loved ones and can cause the policy to end if they aren’t managed carefully. We’ll walk through how your policy handles cash value before you buy.

Is whole life the same as final expense insurance?

Not exactly. Final expense is a small whole life policy meant for funeral and final bills. Whole life on this page means fuller lifelong coverage for family needs that don’t go away, plus cash value. Compare final expense options if burial costs are your main goal.

Can I convert term life to whole life later?

Many term policies include a conversion option that lets you switch to lifelong coverage without new health questions, within the time limits in the policy. Whole life is one common choice. If you already have term coverage, we’ll check its conversion rules for you.

Do whole life payments go up over time?

Not on traditional whole life. Your payment is set when the policy starts and doesn’t rise with age. Some designs let you finish paying sooner, such as over 10 or 20 years, which means higher payments for fewer years. We’ll show you the options.

Can I cash out my whole life policy?

You can usually cancel the policy and take its cash surrender value, which is often less than you paid in during the early years. Your coverage then ends, and part of what you receive may be taxable. We’ll show you how the cash value is projected to build before you buy.

Is whole life insurance a good investment?

It’s insurance first. Cash value grows slowly, especially in the early years, and whole life isn’t meant to replace retirement savings. It can make sense if you want lifelong coverage and like a steady, rule-based cash value. If your main goal is investing, talk with a financial professional too.
