Indexed Universal Life Insurance (IUL)

Lifelong life insurance where interest credited is linked to a market index, within limits set by the insurance company.

Indexed universal life (IUL) is a type of universal life insurance. Its first job is protection: a death benefit paid to the people you name. It is designed to last your lifetime, lets you adjust payments within limits, and has a cash value account that earns interest linked to a market index.

CBIS can compare IUL designs from many insurance companies, and we will tell you plainly when term, whole life or a simpler universal life policy fits better.

What IUL is, and is not

IUL is life insurance, not an investment account. Your money is not invested in the index or the stock market. The index is only used to work out the interest the insurance company credits to the policy’s cash value.

How index crediting works

  • Linked to an index. The insurance company credits interest based on how a market index performs over a set period, often one year.
  • Cap (a top limit). If the index rises a lot, the interest credited is limited to the cap the insurance company sets.
  • Floor (a bottom limit). If the index drops, the floor limits how low the credited rate can go, often 0%.
  • Participation rate. Some policies credit only a share of the index’s change.
  • These can change. Caps and participation rates are set by the insurance company and can be lowered over time, down to the minimums stated in the policy.

Good to know: a 0% floor protects the interest credited, not the cash value itself.

How costs come out, and why cash value can go down

Every month, the policy takes out the cost of the insurance itself plus fees. These costs usually rise as you age. In a year when the index is flat or down and little or no interest is credited, those charges still come out, so the cash value can go down.

If cash value runs too low to cover the charges, you may need to pay more to keep coverage, or the policy can lapse, meaning it ends and nothing is paid. Loans and withdrawals lower the death benefit and can also cause a lapse. Ask to see projections at both current and minimum rates, so you know what could happen if caps or credited rates drop.

Who IUL may fit

  • You want coverage that lasts your lifetime, and your income varies from year to year
  • You want room to pay more in some years and less in others, within limits
  • You are converting a term policy and prefer flexibility over a fixed design
  • You are comfortable with interest that changes year to year, and you are willing to review the policy regularly

It may not fit if you want a set payment you never have to think about, need coverage only for a set number of years, or are looking for a replacement for retirement savings or investments.

IUL with living benefits

Some IUL policies let you use part of your coverage early if you are diagnosed with a qualifying terminal, chronic or critical illness. Any amount you use lowers what your loved ones receive and can affect cash value and how long the policy stays funded. Availability, amounts and cost vary by policy and state. Why regular reviews matter

An IUL is not set-and-forget. Caps, costs and how much you pay in all shape how long coverage lasts. We suggest reviewing the policy with an agent every year or two. Already have an IUL? We review it for free. Get a free policy review.

IUL questions

Is my money invested in the stock market?

No. The index is only used to work out the interest credited. Your cash value is not invested in the index.

Can the cash value go down?

Yes. The floor limits how low the credited interest can go, but monthly charges still come out, and loans or withdrawals reduce value further.

Can the cap change after I buy?

Yes. The insurance company can change caps and participation rates over time, within the minimums stated in the policy.

What happens if I pay less than planned?

The policy uses cash value to cover its costs. If that runs out, you may need to pay more or the policy can lapse. We show you funding scenarios before you buy.

Does nicotine use affect the price?

Yes. Nicotine use, including vaping, is one of the main factors, along with your age, health, coverage amount and how you fund the policy.

How does IUL compare to term or whole life?

It depends on your situation. Many families are better served by term, whole life or a simpler universal life design. We compare them side by side.
